M62 - Your Local History
A lot of finds were uncovered during the archaeological evaluation carried out for the M62 Junction 6 Improvement scheme so we thought it would be nice to provide an interactive website so you can see what we found.

Keep Left Campaign
Keep Left Campaign
In May 2008 we asked drivers to 'Keep Left Unless Overtaking'. This message, and an alternative, 'Don't Hog the Middle Lane', was displayed on Variable Message Signs (VMS) on the Highways Agency network.
This is a popular campaign because it echoes the thoughts of many drivers. It reflects their irritation with those who avoid the left hand lane. Normally lane one has the least amount of traffic. However, when we have displayed these messages in the past, the usage of lane one has increased.
We wished to show the messages to many groups of drivers. This is why we displayed both 'Keep Left Unless Overtaking' and 'Don't Hog the Middle Lane' at varying times of day throughout each week.
Other campaign messages which the Highways Agency uses are 'Don't Drink and Drive', 'Don't Phone Whilst Driving' and 'Make Time for a Break'.
Our programme supports the Department for Transport's Think!' safety campaigns, which tackle road safety issues and aim to improve driver behaviour.
If you would like to send us your comments, all feedback on VMS campaigns is welcome. Please contact us through the Highways Agency Information Line (HAIL). Their telephone number is 0300 123 5000 and their e-mail address is ha_info@highways.gsi.gov.uk.
