Roll out of Pictograms in the South West
February's edition of the TIM Bulletin included an article on the roll-out of Pictogram messages in the South West. The Bulletin can now confirm that Pictogram messages have now been rolled out in the Eastern region, which will then be followed by the South East in July. It is anticipated that other regions will be following later on in the year.
The motorways involved will be as follows:
- M4 (J8-14)
- M40 (J9-11)
- M1 (J1-4)
- M11 (J6-8)
- Two signs on A12 (off M25 J28)
There will be 88 signs on the M4, 34 on the M40, 12 on the M1, 11 on the M11 and 2 on the A12. This will deliver a total of 147 signs in the East.

Variable message signs are either set automatically, when they detect slow moving traffic for example, or can be set by an operator at one of the Regional Control Centres. They are used to warn of upcoming traffic conditions, giving real journey time information and providing advance warning of roadworks and diversions.
The Bulletin will keep you updated as pictograms are rolled-out in other regions.
Improving Fire Officers Safety
Dear TIM Bulletin,
I have read with interest your article in January 2009 in the TIM Bulletin on the safety of Fire Officers on the network. The Bulletin mentions that it will run an article on this initiative once complete. Is it possible for you to give me an update as to where the project currently is?
Adrian Stone, Cornwall Fire Service
Dear Adrian,
Thanks for your response.
I am pleased to say that the DVD is near to completion. A draft has been completed and it is currently with key stakeholders for approval with the hope that it will be released during the summer.
Once completed the Bulletin will feature the DVD including any available footage.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the TIM Bulletin.
