Communicating with Operational Partners using Airwave

Dear TIM Bulletin,

After reading last month's article on the latest development in the Airwave for service providers project, I wondered if there is any possibility of Kent County Council being granted access to Airwave to give them a means of communication with the South East Regional Control Centre (SERCC) and/or Kent Police.

This would be very useful for our Traffic Management Centre which is an active partner in Project Cordon - sharing of variable message signs with the Highways Agency off their network. Kent County Council is in a unique position due to it containing the primary gateway into the UK and can be severely affected when Operation Stack is in place.

Regards

Kent County Council, Traffic Management Centre

Thanks for your response.

Firstly, to gain access to the airwave network and feature on the Office of Communications (Ofcom) Sharers list, Kent County Council must hold an airwave licence.

However, from searching the April 2009 Sharers list (available from the above link) 'Kent County Council Highways Service' is featured so it would appear that they may already have access to Airwave. I would therefore suggest that you check the terms of the licence which will determine if the Traffic Management Centre can have Airwave terminals under your current licence arrangements.

If and when Airwave terminals are available to the Traffic Management Centre, then the Highways Agency would be happy to discuss which talk groups would be appropriate to be used for joint communication. Your initial approach should be to our operational colleagues in the SERCC.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.
