What qualifications do I need?
To join as an Assistant Economist you need to have, or
expect to obtain in 2009, a first or upper second-class
honours degree in economics, or a postgraduate degree in
economics. At least 50% of the course modules must be in
economics. If your first degree was not economics or was a
2:2, your masters will need to be in straight economics. You must have studied both macro and microeconomics
to qualify. If you graduated more than 5 years ago, you must
give examples in the competency section of the application
form, of economic articles and books you have read in depth to
demonstrate that you have maintained competency in economics.

2009 ECONOMIST FAST STREAM SCHEME
The 2009 recruitment scheme will open on 15 September 2008.
Applications must be completed on-line.
There will be two on-line application rounds.
However, if you wish to apply for the Diplomatic Service
Economist option, you can only apply in Round 1.
Please note that you may not apply for the GES
scheme on more than one occasion between 15 September 2008 and
30 April 2009. If you apply for Round 2 of either the
Economist or Statistician schemes having already applied in
Round 1, or applied for a Graduate Fast Stream scheme for
2009, it constitutes a second application and will receive
an automatic fail.
Economic Assessment Centres (EAC)
will be held in November, December and January. If you want
an early EAC date, you must complete each stage of the
application process promptly.
If you are available to start work
immediately, it may be possible to offer you an initial
temporary appointment if you are successful at the Economic
Assessment Centre (EAC). You must then continue with the fast
stream process.
