Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS)

In 2006 the central London headquarters of the Department for Culture Media and Sport were refurbished. The redesigned open-plan office spaces separated by large, glass partitions on six floors presented us with an interesting challenge to commission new works of art. We commissioned three artists who each produced two sets of designs for interleaving floors. Catherine Bertola’s delicate designs on glass are based on enlarged details of traditional patterns for lace, which introduce a note of domesticity into the office environment. Henna Nadeem fittingly worked on the top floor with Islamic patterns that allude to the sky and the heavens, and on the ground floor with abstract designs that reference foliage and the natural world. Simon Faithfull made a series of cityscapes based on magnified drawings from a Palm Pilot that reference the disjointed urban panorama around London’s River Lea.
