23/04/2009  The Italian cabinet approved a decision to shift the G8 Summit in July to Abruzzo. This is a major sign of the determination to impart a fresh boost to the areas so badly hit by the earthquake on 6 April.  The cabinet meeting was held in the Finance Police barracks in Coppito, in the province of L'Aquila.

25/04/2009  The G8 member countries' foreign ministers have issued a joint statement voicing their deep concern over the number of civilian casualties and over the deterioration in the humanitarian situaiton in northern Sri Lanka, where there are numerous reports of injuries to civilians who are unable to seek shelter, and some of them are even being used as human shields.  "The time has come for the clash to stop".  They also voiced their support for the UN mission.

Such is the message sent out by Foreign Minister Franco Frattini on behalf of the Italian G8 Presidency, while Interior Minister Roberto Maroni has called on the G8 countries to enhance the tools for pre-empting and countering the threats spread via Internet.
