Shortly after taking office the Foreign Secretary called for an immediate and thorough review of the FCO’s policy programme spend to ensure that FCO programmes deliver the priorities of the coalition government, focus on where the FCO can make the biggest difference, and deliver the best service to the UK taxpayer at the lowest cost. The conclusions were announced in a Written Ministerial Statement 29 June 2010.
Our programme funds are now aligned to the foreign policy priorities under three broad headings: (1) Security (2) Prosperity and (3) Diplomatic Influences and Values. Details were announced in a second Written Ministerial Statement, 1 February 2011.
In 2011-12, our programme spend will total £139.5 million.
The FCO’s Prosperity fund will focus on promoting sustainable global growth and, in particular, will be consistent with the UK’s development objectives of promoting sustainable development and improving welfare.
