The EIB furthers the objectives of the European Union by making long-term finance available for sound investment.

The EIB Group offers four main services to its clients: loans, technical assistance, guarantees and venture capital.

EIB lending is governed by a series of mandates from the EU in support of EU development and cooperation policies in partner countries.

The EIB organises regular public consultations on key policies governing its operations. In December 2011, a consultation on the Bank's transport lending policy concluded with the adoption of a revised policy. It was the first sector policy the Bank consulted upon publicly.
Six trade unions from Belgium, France and Luxembourg visited the EIB on Wednesday on the European Trade Union Confederation’s European day of action. EIB Secretary General Alfonso Querejeta stated that the Bank’s priority was to support growth and job creation and that 90% of its loans were earmarked for projects within the European Union.
Caribbean small island states will benefit from new funding and technical assistance for initiatives that reduce the negative impact of climate change and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The European Investment Bank will provide USD 65m for a dedicated Climate Action lending programme through the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in 18 countries.
On 16 February 2012, newly appointed EIB President Werner Hoyer presented to the accredited media in Brussels the 2011 activities and achievements. He also outlined the outlook and challenges for 2012. EIB funding for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reached a record level in 2011 as the group remained firmly focused on its mandate to support the real economy.
President Hoyer met with President Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and several government ministers in Athens on Thursday, 23 February, to explore the best ways to contribute to reinvigorating the Greek economy. He also delivered the opening address at the EIB forum there.
