Preparing for Major Incidents
Civil Contingencies Planning
As part of the Dyfed Powys Local Resilience Forum we have been carrying out a risk assessment process looking into the likelihood and impact of a range of major incidents which could occur in the Dyfed Powys area.
Types of Incidents
Incidents fall into two categories - a “hazard” is a non-malicious event, and a “threat” is a planned incident such as a terrorist attack.
Examples of Hazards
- Transport accidents
- Severe weather
- Flooding
- Industrial accidents and environmental pollution
- Human health risks
- Animal health risks
- Industrial technical failure
Examples of Threats
- Attacks using explosives
- Chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear threats
- Electronic attacks affecting utilities and communications
The Risk Assessment Process
We consider what could happen in the worst case scenario. The incidents may not happen or may occur on a smaller scale, but we have to consider all possibilities in our assessment.
Risk assessment is a statutory requirement under the 2004 Civil Contingencies Act. It is an ongoing process, subject to constant review. Further updates will be available on the website when it is practical and appropriate to do so.
Risk Register
The register contains a summary of the type of risks that we are currently assessing for the Dyfed Powys area. For security reasons we do not give more detailed information.
