When George Richards enrolled in the RNVR at HMS Eagle in January 1913, he was 6' tall with brown hair and blue eyes,
a mean chest measurement of 34" and a scar on the right side of his neck. He enrolled with
K B Davis a colleague who was also a Deputy
Superintendent in the Mercantile Marine Office and who, like
Richards, lived in Egremont.
Nothing is known of either man's pre-war service. Richards'
short war service record has, however, survived and shows that he enrolled for overseas service, rated as Ordinary Seaman,
on 30 September 1914. The following year he was at Gallipoli with the RND (Nelson Battalion) and in June was in hospital
with dysentary (1/3rd East Lancs (TF) Field Ambulance). He died soon afterwards of wounds (gunshot wound(s) to the head)
at No.11 Casualty Clearing Station and is buried at Lancashire Landing Cemetery.
