Building on progress made in previous innovation-focussed white papers it proposes action on those policies that will encourage UK businesses to increase their investment in new products and services with the aim of continuously increasing the value added. NMS - The National Measurement System (NMS) is the UK's national infrastructure of measurement laboratories which delivers world-class measurement science & technology and provides traceable and increasingly accurate standards of measurement for use in trade, industry, academia and government.


 

NWML - Legal weights and measures are fundamental to a sustainable trading economy. Every week in the UK, over a billion pounds of goods are weighed and measured at retail level alone. NWML, Trading Standards Officers and other approved persons, are responsible for making sure these measures are correct.


 

OST - Office of Science and Technology is responsible for developing and coordinating Government policy on science and technology both Nationally and Internationally. OST is also responsible for the allocation of the Science Budget (currently over £3 billion per annum) into research via the Research Councils for which the Director General of the Research Councils (DGRC), Sir Keith O'Nions, is responsible.
