GREENING DTI

Sustainable Development in Government

The Government is committed to integrating the environment and wider sustainable development considerations into decision making at all levels.

This work is taken forward by a Cabinet Sub Committee - ENV(SD) - which comprises each department's "Sustainable Development Minister". Sustainable Development Ministers have identified three priority areas for their future work programme:

  • Integrating sustainable development into decision making

  • Improving the performance of the Government Estate

  • Promoting understanding of sustainable development across Government

More information on this programme can be found at the Sustainable Development in Government website.

DTI's Sustainable Minister is Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister for Energy.

DTI's priority is to ensure that environmental concerns are brought into the mainstream of the Department's policy-making and operational management, within the wider context of promoting sustainable development.

The effectiveness of DTI's procedures for environmental screening and appraisal of policies has been reviewed. Revised guidelines will be published here shortly.

Framework for Sustainable Development on the Government Estate

The Framework is the main vehicle for improving the performance of the Government estate and will eventually cover all key environmental and social aspects of running departments. Full details of the framework are available at the Sustainable Development in Government website.

The Framework will set targets covering seven areas. The links below describe these targets (where published) and DTI's actions towards reaching them.

Part A: Overarching Commitments
Part B: Travel
Part C: Water
Part D: Waste
Part E: Energy
Part F: Procurement
Part G: Estates Management
Part H: Biodiversity
Part I:  Social Impacts (not yet published)

DTI's Information and Workplace Services Directorate run an environmental management system accredited to ISO 14001 covering DTI's HQ buildings. Their environmental policy statement sets out its environmental objectives in the running of the estate.
