ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

DTI works with government departments, business and other organisations to create a policy framework that protects and enhances the environment in the most efficient way.

We do this by promoting a flexible, outcomes based approach to environmental protection that is geared towards innovation: 

  • Giving business clear signals about longer-term environmental objectives and priorities

  • Harnessing market mechanisms, including getting price signals right

  • Providing business with sufficient time and stability to adjust and develop internationally competitive solutions

  • And the flexibility to achieve environmental objectives in the most cost-effective manner

Much of the UK's environmental legislation derives from the European Union. DTI works closely with DEFRA - the lead UK department on most issues - during the development and implementation of environmental policy to help secure these objectives.

DTI leads on several new environmental measures that are currently being implemented or under discussion and will affect business and consumers. Further details are provided in the box on this page.
