The Social Enterprise Coalition (SEC) was established in July 2002 to provide a co-ordinated voice for social enterprise and enable stakeholders to work together to develop the sector. SEC is actively involved in shaping the fast moving social enterprise agenda and wants to ensure that as many people as possible from the sector are engaged in this process so that it becomes easier to set up and grow social enterprises across the UK.

Social Firms UK is the national support agency for social firms. They carry out promotion, dissemination, research and lobbying to improve awareness and conditions for social firms. The regional and national social firm network structure is crucial to the service to members, as much of the 'hands-on' development work is carried out at regional level.

The charity's services to social firms include access to a great range of resources and materials about social firm development in the UK and Business Support delivered through national and regional networks.

Community Action Network - "How to Mezzanine Guide"

This subsidiary of the Home Office site looks at all aspects of community work with the aim of creating a better social environment.

  • The ACU are working with CAN to produce an online database of social entrepreneurs.
  • List of reports covering all aspects of community action, including a useful report on community self-help and reports relating to the compact.

Charity Skills

This is an independent and not-for-profit website, developed by a group of people working in charities who saw the internet as a way of supplying voluntary organisations in England and Wales with professional know-how, internet services and training. The intention was to put as many of the services as possible in one place and make them available for as cheap a subscription as possible.

The project has grown and now offers a substantial database of guidance on a broad range of subjects: human resources; risk management and insurance; health and safety; management skills; law; finance; property and communications. It includes free telephone helplines for law, finance, risk management, health and safety and employment, a growing library of online books and free websites for subscribers and a specially designed online training centre for the charity sector.

Equal

Funded through the European Social Fund, Equal is an initiative which tests and promotes new means of combating all forms of discrimination and inequalities in the labour market, both for those in work and for those seeking work, through transnational co-operation. Equal operates across identified thematic fields which embrace the four pillars of the European Employment Strategy and support for asylum seekers. Theme D is strengthening the social economy (the third sector), in particular the services of interest to the community, with a focus on improving the quality of jobs.

NCVO is a lobbying organisation, representing the views of its members and the wider voluntary sector to government, the Charities Commission, the EU and other bodies. The website contains:

Neighbourhood Renewal Unit

Part of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, this unit is responsible for driving progress on neighbourhood renewal across government. Their ultimate aim is that, within ten to twenty years, nobody should be disadvantaged by where they live. Each Government Office for the Regions also has a neighbourhood renewal team.

Scarman Trust

The Scarman Trust is a national charity, committed to helping citizens bring about change in their community, in the way that they want. It funds and gives practical assistance to hundreds of remarkable people with a ‘can-do’ attitude. The investment involves small amounts of high-risk money. ‘Awards’, typically around £2,000, are delivered through a highly accessible process that includes extensive outreach.

School for Social Entrepreneurs

This website is the online presence of Lord Young of Darlington’s School for Social Entrepreneurs. The aim of the site is to offer background information on the school, and to encourage people to sign up for a course. It offers information about the history of the school, its aims, objectives and practical teaching procedures. It includes case studies outlining the benefits and results that the SSE provided to successful social entrepreneurs.

UK Online

ukonline is the easy way to access government services on the internet. It provides a guide through more than 900 government websites to get information quickly and efficiently. Run by the Office of the e-Envoy, part of the Cabinet Office, it is a key part of the UK online initiative.

The UK Social Investment Forum’s primary purpose is to promote and encourage the development and positive impact of socially responsible investment in the UK. Socially responsible investment combines investors’ financial objectives with their commitment to social concerns.

The website contains information on socially responsible investment and investors, stakeholder pensions and a library of documents relating to socially responsible investment.

The DTI has committed funding to support the work of the Social Enterprise Partnership (GB) Ltd (SEP), an ESF Equal-funded national programme. The project runs from May 2002 to November 2005. SEP is a partnership between Social Firms UK, Co-operatives UK, Development Trusts Association, Social Enterprise London, Social Enterprise Coalition and New Economics Foundation. One element of SEP's work is a Training Project where SEP is working in collaboration with Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI) and other partners to map and identify competencies in the skills and knowledge of social enterprise managers and business advisors and to establish national occupational standards and professional qualifications. Two core training programmes will be developed.'

Voluntary Resource
