Overview
The UK environmental goods and services industry is diverse, with its
roots in some long established sectors, notably in the areas of drinking
water supply, waste water treatment, and solid waste management. Today's
industry has helped to deal with the legacy of pollution from Britain's
industrial past, providing practical and effective solutions to a wide
range of environmental problems.
The world market for environmental goods
and services was valued at US$515 billion in 2000 and was forecast to
increase to US$688 billion by 2010. In the last 10 years, the
global markets for environmental goods and services have developed
enormously and it is anticipated that the next 10 years will see even
more substantial change.
The UK environmental industry is strong,
well established and diverse, employing approximately 400,000 people in
around 17,000 companies, with an estimated annual turnover of £25
billion.
Environmental Industries Unit (EIU)
The Environmental Industries Unit (EIU) , a Joint DTI/Defra
unit, is responsible for domestic sponsorship work which cuts across the environmental goods
and services industry (excluding farming and tourism).
The Environmental Industries Unit comprises three areas of work:
Innovation Team. Taking forward the work of the Environmental
Innovation & Growth Team, through the promotion of long-term innovation
in the environmental industry sector, with the business-led
Environmental Innovations Advisory Group (EIAG)- which is made up of
a cross section of industry. This work focuses on four broad issues:
innovation-friendly regulation, sector skills, procurement and
technology.
Domestic Sponsorship Team. The Domestic Sponsorship team focuses on
issues that cut across the UK environmental industries sector- working
to develop closer relations with some of the relevant trade associations
and the regional bodies working to promote the environmental industry.
We are aiming to improve our effectiveness as a channel between the
environmental industry and Government.
The Climate Change Projects Office (CCPO). The CCPO provides
advice to business on how to take advantage of international climate
change project opportunities arising from the Kyoto Protocol. This is
becoming increasingly important as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and
Linking Directive are implemented.
