Natural Hazard Working Group (NHWG)

The Natural Hazard Working Group (NHWG) was established as an ad-hoc advisory group to advise the Prime Minister on the mechanisms that could and should be established for the detection and early warning of physical natural hazards.

This group was established as part of the Government's Response to the Asian Tsunami disaster and met on: 7 April 2005; 24 February 2005; and 25 January 2005. Click here to see the Prime Minister's statement to the House of Commons on 10 January 2005.

The Group's report, published on 8 June 2005, made 3 recommendations:

  1. Establish an International Science Panel for Natural Hazard Assessment;
  2. Explore the possibility of extending the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) early warning system to cover other natural hazards; and
  3. Increase commitment at national and international level to national capacity building for natural hazard assessment.

The report was welcomed by the Prime Minister and the recommendations are currently being taken forward by the United Nations.
