Science and Society

The Government is committed to creating a society that is confident about the development, regulation & use of science , and a science workforce that is representative of the society it serves. 

The term "Science" includes all public and private activities of a scientific and technological nature, including mathematics, engineering and the social sciences.The term "Science & Society" encompasses a wide ranging set of interconnected issues ranging from the regulation, governance and use of science by the Government to the public's support, interest and engagement in science.

Science & Society can be further broken down into the following areas:

1. Science Workforce

  • Promoting science engineering and technology for women and ethnic minorities.
  • Promoting science education in schools, including STEMNET.
  • Research careers (PhD & contract researchers) including implementing the Roberts Review through Research Councils.

2. Public Engagement

  • Promoting public engagement and dialogue about science and the issues that it raises for society.
  • Overview of science & society work across Whitehall and strategies for improved collaboration and networking.

3. Communications

  • Implementation of external communications strategies for DIUS.
  • Liaison between the DIUS and the Houses of Commons and Lords Select Committees on science and technology issues.
