Productivity in the UK: 3 – The Regional Dimension  (November 2001) - Published by HMT and dti, this report looks at the economic analysis that underlies the Government’s approach to regional policyand the institutional frameworks required to deliver it.  It discusses means of both creating an environment conducive to a stable macro-economy and enabling regional bodies to best deal with locally specific issues.

Regional Competitiveness and the State of the Regions (Biannual - from October 2003) - This publication includes the Regional Competitiveness Indicators and presents statistics and information to illustrate factors contributing to the UK’s regional competitiveness. Sections refer to competitiveness, labour markets, business development, land and infrastructure. The publication includes the Business Competitiveness Indicators.

Regional Trends (Annual, currently Issue 37 – 2002) - The ONS publishes the most comprehensive collection of regional statistics covering demographic, social, industrial and economic issues. The website above offers both the publication in full and the extensive datasets used.

Competing in the Global Economy: The Innovation Challenge” – Chapter 6: Regional Innovation. (December 2003) - The DTI report into UK innovation looks at the contribution innovation can make to UK productivity. Chapter 6 deals with the regional aspects and implications. The whole document is available here.

Identifying the Flow of Domestic and European Expenditure Into the English Regions” (September 2003) - Professor Iain McLean’s report into public expenditure, both home and EU based, in the regions of England – also looking at the allocative mechanisms that help to determine the levels of such spending.

Public Service Agreement Performance Indicators - HMT and DTI jointly publish data that indicates progress made towards the Regional Economic Performance PSA Target. The web page above is a useful source of leading indicator data for the regions.

Indicators:          1.    Regional GVA per head at current basic prices: 1989-2001.

ONS Regional First Releases (Monthly) - Individual statistical reports that offer data and commentary on the labour market situation in each GO area at regional and sub regional level. Topics include employment, unemployment, activity and inactivity and an archive exists back to 1998.
