Post
Office Company (Nomination and Appointed Day) Order 2001 [S.I.2001/8]
In parallel with the commencement of the Postal Services Act 2000, the company
that became the Post Office company was established, and on 4 January 2001 a nomination
order made - nominating the company. The same order set 26 March 2001 as the appointed
day on which the transfer would take place. The company is wholly owned by
the Government - one ordinary share being held by the HM Treasury solicitor (as
a nominee of HM Treasury) and 49,999 ordinary shares and one special share being
held by the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry. The nominated company
(Consignia plc) was renamed Consignia Holdings plc on 25 January 2001.
It should be noted that on the 4 November 2002 the company then renamed itself
Royal Mail Holdings plc - and the operating subsidiary, Consignia plc, was
renamed Royal Mail Group plc. Also note that the company now called Royal
Mail Group plc, which holds a licence for providing the universal postal
service, is therefore not the Post Office company, but is a wholly owned
subsidiary of that company.
