APPOINTMENT TO CONSUMER COUNCIL FOR POSTAL SERVICES

Postal Services Minister Stephen Timms today announced the appointment of Helen Charlton as a National Council Member of Postwatch.

The Consumer Council for Postal Services, Postwatch, was set up in January 2001 to protect, promote and develop the interests of all users of postal services in the United Kingdom. It replaced the Post Office Users National Council (POUNC). The Council consists of a Chairman, four Council Members and nine Regional Committee Chairmen.

Stephen Timms said:

"Postwatch plays an important role as the independent representative of postal consumers.

"With her experience, I am sure that Helen Charlton will make a valuable contribution to the work of Postwatch; particularly in bringing a wide-ranging knowledge of competition law with her".

Helen Charlton is currently a member of the Postwatch Greater London Regional Committee. Helen joined the Greater London Committee in early 2001. Her career includes both public and private sector work. Helen has served on the Electricity Consumers' Committee for London and is a qualified Solicitor. Helen's previous experience as a Partner with Denton Hall solicitors (now Denton Wilde Sapte) enabled her to gain extensive knowledge and experience in competition and EU law.

2. Council Members for Postwatch receive a fee of £210 per day, based on an average three days per month.
3. The appointment follows National Council Member Ms Anne Foster's departure on 31 December 2003. Helen Charlton's appointment is for three years and took effect from 1 January 2004.
