APPOINTMENT OF COUNCIL MEMBER OF POSTWATCH


Stephen Timms, DTI Minister for E-Commerce and Competitiveness, today confirmed the appointment of Clara Arokiasamy as a Council Member of Postwatch.

Notes for Editors:

1. Clara Arokisamy is currently the Deputy Director of Operations at the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) She joined the Heritage Lottery Fund in August 1999. Her career spans across a number of public sectors including the health services, local authorities and the voluntary sector focusing on the management of strategic planning, customer care, community capacity building, cultural diversity, and regeneration. She has also worked as an independent management consultant. Prior to joining the HLF she was a senior manager in the London Borough of Waltham Forest where she was responsible for the planning and marketing of, arts, tourism, museum and gallery services.

2. Clara Arokiasamy is a Trustee of SHAPE which is responsible for promoting access to facilities and employment opportunities in the arts for disabled people. She was a Council member on the Post Office User Council, the predecessor to Postwatch.

3. Clara Arokiasamy has not undertaken political activity in the past five years.

4. The Consumer Council for Postal Services (Postwatch) was established on 1 January 2001, replacing the Post Office Users National Council (POUNC). The Headquarters is located in London, it has nine regional offices throughout the UK. The Council consists of a Chairman, four Council Members and nine Regional Council Chairmen.

5. Council Members for Postwatch receive a fee of £210 per day, based on an average 2 days per week.

6. The appointment follows the resignation of Mrs Janet Candler. Ms Arokiasamy took up her post on the Council from 22 April 2002.
