Local Community

If you live near a nuclear site, you may be interested in how the proposals will affect you. You may also wish to make your views known to us. In turn, the Government has indicated that major decisions at sites will only be taken after consultation. This page will provide you with information about the Government's commitment to engaging with local communities.

Commitment to openness, transparency and consultation
The White Paper committed the Government to putting in place management arrangements for clean up that are open and transparent and command public confidence. The aim therefore is to create an NDA that, from the outset, is a champion of public information, working actively with stakeholders and earning confidence by its actions.

Proposed NDA stakeholder framework
As a first step, work is under way to develop a Stakeholder Engagement Framework which the NDA can build on once it has been established. The framework asks a series of questions about how the NDA should work with stakeholders to ensure that the legacy is cleaned up in the best way possible. To find out more see the proposed Stakeholder Engagement Framework.

Opportunities to participate in decision making
You do not have to wait for the NDA to become operational in order to make your views known. The DTI's programme of regional events, which started in March, are one way you can make your views known. Another is to comment on those documents that the Department is seeking views on over the coming months. And one of the many purposes of this website is to enable people to input their ideas, opinions and comments as and when they want to do so. Contact details can be found in the right hand column.

Local Liaison Committees
Most UK nuclear installations already have Local (or Local Community) Liaison Committees (LLC) to voice local views to the site licensee. As promised in the White Paper, the Department commissioned a study of UK and international best practice for stakeholder engagement. This included a review of LLCs. We would welcome your views on the review.
