What type of work does NMS fund

Distribution of activety across the NMS

  • Fundamental research into measurement;
  • Development of new measurement techniques, procedures and instrumentation;
  • Maintenance of primary national measurement standards;
  • Provision of high-accuracy non-routine calibration and testing services;
  • Provision of traceability in measurement through a pyramid of accreditation;
  • Knowledge transfer activities to promote the wide uptake and exploitation of NMS outputs;
  • Underpin regulation, for example, through type approval and control in the use of weighing machines and volume measurement equipment used in trade;
  • Support for international activities, for example, management of international technical inter-comparisons.
