5 April 1959

Educated:
Glynne Primary, Crestwood School (formerly Brierley Hill Grammar School)
Balliol College Oxford, University of Warwick.

Qualifications:
BA Hons. Philosophy, Politics and Economics, Oxford University. MA in
Industrial Relations and Ph.D in Industrial and Business Studies, University of Warwick.

Parliamentary Career:
MP for Dudley South (previously Dudley West) since 1994; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, The Northern Ireland Office since Nov 2002: Government Whip 2001-2002; Education and Employment Select Committee 1999-2001; PPS to Paymaster General, 1997-8; Treasury Select Committee 1995-7.

Previous career:
Joint Chief Executive WMEB Group 1992-94 (Director of Marketing 1989-92); Strategy Consultant, 1988-89; Deputy Director, Urban Trust, 1987-88. Researcher, University of Warwick, 1983-87; Local Government Officer, The Labour Party, 1985-87.

Personal:
Married, with two daughters and one son.

Biography:
Ian Pearson entered the House of Commons in the first by-election after Tony Blair was elected leader of the Labour Party in December 1994. He was appointed as a Minister in the Northern Ireland Office in November 2002 having previously served as a Government Whip and on the Education and Employment Select Committee. Ian takes a deep interest in industry, treasury and regional policy issues. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Paymaster General at HM Treasury from 1997-98 and served on the Treasury Select Committee as an opposition back bencher before the 1997 General Election. Before his election, Ian headed up WMEB Group, a West Midlands based economic development company providing development capital to small and medium sized companies and consultancy to a range of public and private sector clients. Previously he has worked for a large accountancy practice, a national urban charity and a firm of strategic policy consultants. Ian Pearson has a degree in economics and politics from Balliol College, Oxford, and a master's and a doctorate in industrial and Business Studies from Warwick University.
