STEP (Shell Technology Enterprise Programme)

STEP is a national programme designed to help SMEs and community organisations develop their potential by making use of the skills of undergraduates, and also to encourage undergraduates to consider a career in smaller firms.

The scheme places penultimate year undergraduates for 8 weeks during the summer vacation, working on business-related or science, engineering or technology based projects identified by the company or community organisation. At the end of the project all students must produce a written report, and give a short presentation of the results.

Ideas for projects include:

  • establishing the feasibility of a new product or service

  • investigating export opportunities

  • cost analysis of production processes

  • equal opportunities monitoring and evaluation

  • developing new software applications

Eligible companies must be independent, with under 250 employees, have a suitable project for the student to undertake, and be able to commit proper resources into supervising the project effectively. During the summer of 1999 there were about 1500 STEP placements.
