access to knowledge
STEP (Shell Technology Enterprise Programme)
STEP is a national programme designed to help SMEs and community
organisations develop their potential by making use of the
skills of undergraduates, and also to encourage undergraduates
to consider a career in smaller firms.
The scheme places penultimate year undergraduates for
8 weeks during the summer vacation, working on business-related
or science, engineering or technology based projects identified
by the company or community organisation. At the end of
the project all students must produce a written report,
and give a short presentation of the results.
Ideas for projects include:
- establishing the feasibility of a new product or service
- investigating export opportunities
- cost analysis of production processes
- equal opportunities monitoring and evaluation
- developing new software applications
Eligible companies must be independent, with under 250
employees, have a suitable project for the student to undertake,
and be able to commit proper resources into supervising
the project effectively. During the summer of 1999 there
were about 1500 STEP placements.
