A Conference on the Knowledge Driven Economy held on the 7th March at the New Connaught Rooms, London.

'Knowledge 2000' a joint DTI/DfEE conference supported by both the TUC and the CBI brought together Government, industry and commerce to look at the new knowledge driven economy and its importance to the UK's future.

The main theme of the conference was how to build a successful knowledge driven economy in the 21st century. The success of the UK, and of Europe, depends more than ever on how well we exploit our most valuable assets; our knowledge, skills and creativity. Relying simply on traditional methods to gain competitive advantage will not be enough. All businesses in all sectors must find new sources of competitive advantage and the ability to innovate , to create new products and exploit new markets are the keys to business success. Competitive advantage in the global economy will only be secured by working in partnership, with a joint commitment to constant innovation, enterprise and enhanced performance.

With key speakers from Government and business, and an audience of almost 400 which included many union representatives, the conference addressed the issues of the UK's position in Europe; the need for creativity and innovation and the use of technology in a knowledge driven economy. The importance to business of skills for the changing labour market, the union contribution to the skills agenda and the need to work in partnership to attain common goals were also discussed, with company presentations by speakers from Heathcoat & Co Ltd, FrameStore, HSBC and Littlewoods.
