£100 million for UK business to research and develop new technologies from environmentally friendly low carbon projects to leading edge manufacturing was announced in the Budget.

White Paper pilots: whole system long term conditions (LTC) demonstrator programme
The July 2005 Department of Health White Paper, ‘Our Health, Our Care, Our Say’ outlined plans to develop large scale demonstration pilots of assistive and monitoring technologies.  In addition, the White Paper set out a commitment to ‘carry out this project in close collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry so that the findings can inform a joint approach to our work with business and the research community to develop technology that will better meet the challenges identified'. Read More

DTI, DfT and EPSRC have released details of an initiative, Future Intelligent Transport Systems (FITS), for academic/industry multidisciplinary research and innovation consortia  to enable UK industry and universities to work in collaboration to address key research issues in the longer-term development of the UK transport system. UK photonics strategy seeks commercial success
A wide-ranging review of photonics activity in the UK has revealed that fragmentation in the industry is limiting the potential for large-scale commercial success.

The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to the photonics community with the launch of a strategic review of optics-based activity throughout the country. The Photonics Strategy Group, which carried out the review on behalf of the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), acknowledged the strength of technical innovation in the UK and highlighted the strong growth that is predicted for photonics products worldwide, but warned that fragmentation in the commercial sector could limit the UK's ability to capitalize on those opportunities. Read More

NEW NETWORK ENGINEERS SUCCESS
Today sees the launch of the Electronics Enabled Products Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), designed to benefit a large section of UK industry including electronics users within defence, automotive and aerospace sectors.

Harnessing the academic strengths of both Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham and the industrial and technology transfer expertise of Pera, the KTN will address the needs of companies active in the design and manufacture of complex engineered products underpinned by electronics. The Network has also extended its European links by encompassing the internationally renowned Fraunhofer TEG as an associate partner. Read more

Research Councils and UK Sensing Network Unite in Advanced Instrumentation Partnership
PPARC, the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have today joined with the Department of Trade and Industry to become major sponsors and partners of the Sensors Knowledge Transfer Network. The move recognises and cements the strategic importance of instrumentation to research facilities and the UK economy.

Launch of Materials KTN and Smart Materials Network
The Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury, recently announced the development of a new business support initiative relating to Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTN). The Materials KTN will embrace the activities of a number of existing networks including the Faradays of Advance, Packaging, Plastics, Powdermatrix, TechniTex, the National Composites Network and a new network involving Smart Materials, Surfaces and Structures.

The Materials KTN and the New Smart Materials Network will be officially launched at the Science Museum on Thursday 19 January 2006, with a keynote speech by Lord Sainsbury.

04/07/05Grid Computing Knowledge Transfer Network Launch - 6 July 2005
The Grid Computing Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) is aimed at UK organisations from all sectors to enable them to take advantage of the significant advances being made in the grid computing field. The project will develop and maintain a web infrastructure, create a network of interested members and run a series of events aimed at sharing experience and improved understanding of the field. It is targeted at business owners, business advisers and senior IT leaders with responsibility for strategy and investment decisions.

The evening will feature an outline of the plans for the Knowledge Transfer Network, a demonstration of the web infrastructure and poster displays/demonstrations from several Collaborative R&D projects in the Inter-Enterprise Computing field, sister projects to the Grid Computing KTN.
