A key factor in the success of any business, especially one that is innovating and growing, is the quality of its management and leadership.
In the UK, around 14% of the workforce have significant management responsibilities (Labour Force Survey), but UK managers are perceived to lag behind those in France, Germany and the US in terms of experience and competence (IMD).
For businesses to be competitive, they need managers and leaders who understand the value of and need for skills, and can deploy and utilise skills in support of innovation.
What the government is doing
The DTI is working with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and other key partners to take forward work that is designed to improve the UK management capability, including an Inspired Leadership Project and support for small and medium sized businesses to improve their management and leadership capabilities.
Create a Personal Development Plan is an interactive tool designed for company owners and managers to assess their management and leadership skills. It gives the user a personal action plan for development and provides signposts to further advice and information.
The Inspirational Leadership tool enables you to identify, understand and use your strongest attributes for inspiring others.
DTI and DfES have set up an Advisory Panel on Management and Leadership chaired by Ian Smith (Senior Vice-President and UK Managing Director of Oracle) to oversee the range of Government support, identify priorities for securing greatest impact and act as a champion in promoting management and leadership activity with employers.
