Broadband
Information Communication Technology (ICT) is now recognised as a major
economic driver. To enable the UK to maintain its position as one of the
best places in the world for eBusiness, the DTI remains committed to
ensuring that UK businesses can harness the power of ICT to support
communications, commerce and innovation.
Businesses in the UK are deploying ICT more pervasively and innovatively
than ever before. We now see employees on the move quite at ease
accessing their company network through remote connections, and more
broadly, businesses are ever more integrated in their exchange of
product, schedule and financial information.
Broadband is a technology that enables both businesses and the public to
access a wide variety of new ICT services. This suite of technologies
offers the potential to transform the development and use of ICT
applications and services. There are currently over 7 million broadband
connections in the UK (March 2005), with this figure growing at over 60,000 per
week. The UK has the most extensive broadband network in the G7 group
of countries, with over 97% of households able to receive broadband.
The
Government is committed to ensuring that all of society can benefit from
the new services that ICT can provide. The recent document,
Connecting the UK: the Digital Strategy, outlines the steps the
Government is taking so that ICT can improve the cohesion of our
society, the wealth of its economy and the quality of life of its
people.
This
site provides information on the Digital Strategy, links to Government
and other relevant ICT reports and information about how to make the
most of broadband. The DTI
Case Studies website, also contains hundreds of stories and examples
of the benefits people around the UK have gained from broadband.
