GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION CHARTER STANDARD STATEMENT

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) fully endorse the Geographic Information Charter Standard Statement as promulgated by the Interdepartmental Group on Geographic Information (IGGI).

This Statement encourages departments and agencies to :

  • consult users when preparing specifications or drafting legislation for the collection of data
  • provide information about what data is available
  • provide clear statements on the price of data
  • make data available, unless there are specific reasons for not doing so, in which case those reasons should be explained
  • make data available in standard formats wherever possible
  • ensure that data adhere to British, European and international standards, unless there are specific reasons for not doing so, in which case these reasons should be explained
  • supply accompanying documentation with data to enable users to judge the fitness for purpose
  • consult users before the destruction of any data set, subject to the prior guidance of the Public Record Office
  • publish a contact point to deal with enquiries
  • provide information about how users cam complain if they are not satisfied with the service they receive.
