Professional Development in Unintentional Injury Prevention
A short course for people working in injury prevention

Details of the 2004-2005 university-accredited short course in injury prevention run in conjunction with the University of Newcastle are now available on our web site - for full details please visit: www.capt.org.uk/course/main.htm

The course stimulates a deeper interest in unintentional injury prevention and develops the knowledge and skills required in research, programme implementation, evaluation and policy and strategic development. It provides an up-to-date theoretical framework and the opportunity to develop skills within a variety of case studies, workshops, seminars and lectures using the resources of a university setting.

The course is targeted at people involved in injury prevention action, co-ordination, management and research in any agency. We expect the course to be relevant to those working or training in public health, health promotion, fire, road or home safety, Sure Start schemes, injury prevention research, environmental health and other areas of injury and accident prevention. It also provides a valuable entry to the subject for those starting academic research in the field.

The closing date for applications is 31 July 2004.

Raising standards – British Standards Institute's (BSI) Consumer and Societal Policy Unit seeks help

In 2003 BSI's consumer representatives have helped make buildings and cash machines more accessible, contributed to an international standard for redress, set standards for clothing that protects kids from the sun, written guidance for language school operators, proposed an international system for water safety symbols, improved the safety of recreational diving, and made fireworks safer and quieter …amongst other things!

Could your experience improve consumer protection and prevent consumer detriment? BSI's Consumer and Societal Policy Unit is currently recruiting more consumer representatives. We want new representatives to sit on existing technical committees in traditional areas such as product specification. We also want representatives who can get involved in ground breaking work in the standards field, looking at how standards might be used in current areas of consumer detriment, particularly in the services area.

BSI's Consumer Policy Committee

Standards matter. Standards can make products and services safer, more accessible and more usable. But they can only achieve this if real consumers' needs and values are well understood by those making standards .

Through its consumer policy activities BSI aims to ensure that the interests of all consumers are properly considered, taking into account the needs of children, older people, people with disabilities and different ethnic groups. We co-ordinate a group of approximately 60 consumer volunteers and representatives from consumer organizations who input directly to standards development and standards policy at national and international levels.

Recruiting for representatives

We are looking for volunteers (expenses paid) with a wide range of skills and experience. Vacancies exist in the following areas: childcare and leisure equipment, quality management, clothes sizing, tourism services, environmental claims and other consumer services. We’re open to hearing from anyone who has experience and enthusiasm for making better products and services for all.

Volunteering as a BSI Consumer Representative is one way of contributing to a better framework of societal and consumer protection for everyone.
