Means of escape for disabled people

Escape from buildings is an increasing problem - particularly with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act making access to many more areas of buildings a legal requirement.

BS 5588 part 8 has recently been revised, placing an emphasis on provision and management of means of escape and the building as a whole.

West Dorset District Council Building Control and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service have released a video. Means of Escape for Disabled People, presented by David Rockett, illustrates the practical problems that must be addressed when considering means of escape for the disabled from public buildings, and best practice elsewhere. It gives practical illustrations and knowledgeable constructive comment and is ideal for informative training.

Means of Escape for Disabled People BS5588 Part 8, is available on video (£65 + VAT) or DVD (£85 + VAT) from:

West Dorset District Building Control,
Stratton House,
Dorchester, DT1 1UZ.

A script is available for the hard of hearing at no extra charge.

To order please print out and complete the form and return to the address provided.
