Department of Trade & Industry:
an outline history
Throughout its long history the Department of Trade & Industry (formerly the Board of Trade) has encompassed such a wide range of interests that it has had a greater impact on the general public than most government departments. At different times the department has had a finger in almost every administrative pie, from the care of the colonies in the 18th and 19th centuries to clothes rationing in the second world war, from regional policy to exporting and from insolvency to the calibration of weights and measures.
The Information and Library Services has produced this up to date version of the outline history of the department, together with a list of presidents of the Board of Trade.
