The
Gulf
The
EU signed a signed a Co-operation Agreement with the Gulf
Co-operation Council (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi
Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) in 1988. Negotiations
for an EU-GCC free trade area are continuing. The GCC is
in the process of forming a customs union. All GCC countries
are either members of, or in the case of Oman and Saudi
Arabia, applicants to the World Trade Organisation. Oman’s
bilateral and multilateral negotiations were concluded this
summer and approved by the WTO General Council in October
2000. Her accession will need to be ratified domestically
before she can become a WTO Member. Saudi Arabia is currently
engaged in bilateral and multilateral negotiations to agree
her market access commitments and terms of entry into the
WTO.
