UK Bilateral Trade Relations

The UK negotiates with countries or regions outside of the EU (known as third countries) in order to develop open and competitive markets for UK companies. We do this by:

  • Projecting UK policies for the removal of trade barriers
  • Promoting a new round of multilateral trade negotiations as the prime means to secure further liberalisation and avert dangers of protectionism
  • Working to avoid and control trade disputes

The UK’s bilateral relationship with third countries differs from Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) in that the UK has sole competence in bilateral negotiations compared to the European Union having the competence on RTAs.
