Muslim Council of Great Britain/ British Muslim Research Council/ Muslim
Directory/The Muslim News
A
consortium of Muslim organisations, led by The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB),
and including Muslim Directory, The Muslim News and the British Muslim Research
Centre (BMRC), have established a joint project to increase the community's
awareness of the new Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations
and build capacity in Muslim organisations to face the challenges ahead
The
project consortium is producing a poster and an 8 page booklet, in colour,
identifying the key provisions of the new law and directing the public to where
they can obtain further information and advice. The booklet includes
a summary in Arabic, Bengali and Urdu for distribution in mosques,
Islamic centres and community associations around the country. As part of
the capacity building, regional briefing sessions are being conducted in
Birmingham, Bradford, Cardiff, Glasgow, London and Manchester for Muslim
lawyers, community workers, employers, Imams and equality officers of local
councils, to ensure a thorough understanding of the new law and learn about
experiences and concerns of the Muslim community. A specialised
one day training workshop will also take place in London on 20 March 2004, aimed
at those individuals who can continue to build capacity and increase awareness
at the local level.
The
project consortium is also producing a Good Practice Guide to assist both employers
and employees, which will bring together the work conducted throughout the
project, set out best practice and include FAQs. It is aimed that the
Good Practice Guide will be launched in London at the beginning of April.
The
Project Officer, Nusrat Chagtai, is also responding to queries from
both employers and the Muslim community and compiling FAQs for the Good Practice
Guide as well as for the website. For further information, please visit
the Muslim Council of Britain website
