Geography

Geography provides opportunities to promote enterprise and entrepreneurial skills through the study of environmental change and sustainable development. Through geography pupils can develop and practise skills, attitudes and personal qualities relevant to enterprise.

Learning through enterprise – contributes to improving motivation and raising achievement by helping pupils make connections between what they learn in the classroom with the world outside.

It provides opportunities for pupils to:
bullet ask geographical questions
bullet suggest appropriate sequences of investigation
bullet collect, record and present evidence
bullet analyse and evaluate evidence and draw and justify conclusions
bullet communicate in different ways, including using ICT
bullet develop and practise decision making skills

Learning about enterprise – helps pupils develop an understanding of enterprise in business and the wider community.

It provides opportunities for pupils to:
bullet identify the role of self employment in different types of economic activity
bullet explore the role of self employment in developed countries and in underdeveloped countries
bullet develop greater understanding of the factors influencing decisions about setting up, expanding and shutting down enterprises

Learning for enterprise – provides an opportunity for pupils to develop and practise entrepreneurial skills.

It provides opportunities for pupils to:
bullet recognise the wider relevance of skills developed through the study of geography
bullet develop and practise a number of key skills and entrepreneurial skills including problem solving and working together
