Business studies involves the investigation of how enterprise adds value by organising the production of goods and services........Economics is one of several disciplines which contributes to the understanding and analysis of business behaviour.'

Business education

In business education pupils learn about business and apply their knowledge and understanding to a range of real world contexts. These contexts may include enterprise activity or preparing for self-employment. In GCSE courses pupils may carry out and evaluate enterprise activity as part of their coursework. The Intermediate GNVQ in Business also includes enterprise activities and preparing for self-employment as optional units.

Learning through enterprise - contributes to improving motivation and raising achievement by helping pupils make connections between the skills they learn in the classroom with the world outside.

It provides opportunities for pupils to:
bullet explore self-employment
bullet identify potential products
bullet understand current business theory
bullet understand the integrated nature of business
bullet communicate in different ways using ICT
bullet develop decision-making skills
bullet collect, record, analyse and evaluate evidence and draw and justify conclusions

Learning about enterprise - helps pupils develop an understanding of enterprise in business and the wider community.

It provides opportunities for pupils to:
bullet understand how the economy functions, including the role of enterprise
bullet understand the challenges of self-employment including the personal qualities and business skills required
bullet understand the rights and responsibilities of consumers, employers and employees
bullet investigate a real business
bullet analyse the challenges and problems encountered by a business and how that business attempts to overcome its problems
bullet understand how to negotiate finance and prepare a business plan

Learning for enterprise - provides an opportunity for pupils to develop and practise entrepreneurial skills.

It provides opportunities for pupils to:
bullet recognise the wider relevance of skills developed through the study of business
bullet develop and practise key skills and entrepreneurial skills especially problem solving and working with others
