Energy Review: Useful Links

A vast amount of information exists on the internet that can help facilitate the debate on the future of the UK's energy policy. We have selected a small number of links to a range of studies, reports, surveys and general information by key stakeholders in the energy industry. The list is not meant to be exhaustive, but aims to provide an overview of some of the key publications that have been brought to our attention.

CBI: Powering the Future - enabling the UK energy market to deliver  A 2005 report looking at how the UK can meet its future energy challenges, and what can be done to improve the fiscal and regulatory framework in which the energy market operates

Defra: Climate Change  A new UK Climate Change Programme was published on 28 March 2006. This followed an extensive review, launched in September 2004, of the existing Programme.

EEF: 2005 Survey of Energy Prices  EEF's survey looks at the extent of recent increases in energy costs and identifies the measures that companies are taking to reduce the impact of higher utility bills.

Energyfuture  Recently launched by energywatch, the independent gas and electricity watchdog, energyfuture gives a mix of facts, opinion pieces, articles, and straw polls on the future of energy in the UK, and aims to give people a voice during the DTI's Energy Review.

Friends of the Earth: A Bright Energy Future  This report published in March 2006 forms part of Friends of the Earth's submission to the Government's Energy Review, and looks to analyse how Britain's energy sector could develop over the next 25 years.

Green Peace: Decentralising UK Energy  The Greenpeace report looks at effective and viable options for tackling climate change.

Northern Ireland: Strategic Energy Framework  This report published in 2004 sets out the government's energy vision for Northern Ireland over the coming decade.

Royal Society: Response to the Stern Review  The Royal Society's response to the Stern Review's consultation looks at how economic analyses of climate change can be informed by sound science.

Scottish Energy Study  This is the first major study of energy supply and demand to be conducted in Scotland for nearly 15 years. It aims to enable the Scottish Executive to appreciate the opportunities open to Scotland, in the context of a drive for the more sustainable use of energy, and what needs to be done to secure success.

In December 2006, at the Pre-Budget Report, the Chancellor welcomed the Eddington and Barker reviews which both made recommendations for the planning systems that affect energy projects. In Spring 2007 the Government will publish a Planning White Paper setting out its proposals in response to Kate Barker's recommendations for land use planning, and for taking forward Kate Barker's and Rod Eddington's proposals for reform of major infrastructure planning. HM Treasury: Stern Review  The Stern Review looks at the economics of climate change, to understand more comprehensively the nature of the economic challenges and how they can be met, in the UK and globally. The review is being taken forward jointly by the Cabinet Office and HM Treasury.

Sustainable Development Commission Report  In response to the Government’s current Energy Review, the SDC report gives a balanced examination of the pros and cons of nuclear power.
