Ministry of Defence

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the consultation on offshore natural gas storage and liquefied natural gas import facilities: The Ministry of Defence (MOD) (Defence Estates (Safeguarding)) is already a statutory consultee for all issues relating to licensing under the Petroleum Act of oil and gas exploration, drilling and decommissioning of facilities in UK waters. MOD would also wish to be fully involved as a statutory consultee on all aspects of licensing, including site selection, applications for exploration and/or development (e.g. platforms, drilling, pipelines, etc) and decommissioning, for offshore natural gas storage. This will enable any potential conflicts between defence operations and activities and offshore developments for natural gas storage to be fully addressed and, wherever possible, resolved. In common with arrangements for consultation on licensing under the Petroleum Act, MOD would also reserve the right to object to any proposals relating to site selection, or licensing applications, relating to offshore natural gas storage, which would conflict with or prevent defence operations and activities being conducted offshore.
