G8: UK Presidency 2005

In 2005, the UK held the Presidency of the G8. The Prime Minister's priorities were climate change and Africa.  Energy policy and technology is integral to tackling climate change and we worked closely with Defra to ensure that energy issues were integrated into the agenda.

The DTI co-hosted two significant events: the Energy and Environment Ministers' Round Table in March 2006 and the first meeting on 1 November 2005 of the Gleneagles Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development.  This brought together energy and environment ministers from the 20 countries with the most significant energy needs.  The Gleneagles Dialogue will report to the Japanese Presidency in 2008.  DTI was also instrumental in the development of the Gleneagles Plan of Action which set out an ambitious work plan for the International Energy Agency, the World Bank and G8 member states.

Russia took over the Presidency of the G8 on 1 January 2006.  It has placed energy security high on its agenda for the summit in St Petersburg, to be held in July.  We are working with other Departments to promote the role of markets, enhance their operation and promote energy efficiency.
