The Future of Consumer Representation

DTI is currently consulting on proposals to alter the arrangements for the representation of utility consumers.

Under the proposals, customers would initially contact Consumer Direct with enquiries or complaints about gas and electricity matters.  If the complaint cannot be resolved by the supplier, they would have access to an ombudsman - along the lines of that being developed for billing disputes - with powers to resolve disputes.  There would be a new national council, tentatively known as Consumer Voice, that would carry out the policy-making and advisory functions of existing consumer bodies.
