We are all consumers and we all want a fair deal. The Government is determined to build a fairer and more prosperous Britain. A fair deal and prosperity go hand in hand.

The links below offer more information on what Government is doing for consumers.

Consumer Affairs

The Aim of Consumer Affairs Directorate is to help consumers make well-informed purchases which encourage innovation and competitiveness and to protect them from unsafe products and unfair business practices.

Consumer Gateway

This award winning site provides easy access to a wealth of consumer advice and information available on the internet.

Consumer White Paper

The Consumer White Paper "Modern Markets: Confident Consumers" puts consumers centre stage. It recognises for the first time that confident, demanding consumers are good for business. They promote innovation and stimulate better value and in return they get better products at lower prices.

Quality Mark Scheme

The Government's Quality Mark Scheme is currently being piloted in the Birmingham and Somerset areas. It gives people in these areas access to independently inspected and approved tradesmen such as builders, plumbers, electricians and roofers who are guaranteed to do a quality job on your home.

Home Safety Network

The DTI launched a Home Safety Network website in November 2000 aimed primarily at activists in local government, voluntary and other bodies involved in Home Safety promotion. It also includes general safety advice relevant to the public covering topics such as Falls, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, Burns & Scalds and other key areas of home accidents. The site contains details of recently published reasearch, publicity materials, statistics, news and events and examples of good practice. There is also a password -protected database of over 1,200 members to encourage networking and campaign planning across the country. To access the site, click here.
