Review of the Sustainable Construction Strategy

The DTI Construction Sector Unit (CSU) is carrying out a review of the Government's Strategy for Sustainable Construction.  A consultation has been launched on an updated strategy, which will be open until 26th April 2006.

The current strategy Building a Better Quality of Life - a strategy for more sustainable construction was published 5 years ago. Since its publication there have been major developments both in Government policy and industry.

Alun Michael (Minister of State for Industry & the Regions) made the following statement to Parliament on Thursday 2nd Feb 2006, launching the consultation:

" I am today launching a consultation process on the Government's draft Strategy for Sustainable Construction Report 2006. The Strategy is an update of the existing ‘Building a better quality of life’ produced by the then DETR, and focuses on the principle of Sustainable Development to which the Government as a whole is signed up.

The purpose of updating the strategy is to provide a framework to guide future progress within the Construction Industry. I expect the review to be complete and published by Summer 2006 and I shall inform the House of the outcome.
"

CSU will be consulting both Government and industry to review:

  • what progress has been made in promoting sustainable construction over the past five years

  • what our current practice is within the industry, together with priorities

  • and take a forward look on how we see sustainable construction developing and what the future priorities should be
