COAL HEALTH CLAIMS

Nigel Griffiths, Minister with responsibility for Coal Health Claims

The first offer under the new respiratory disease risk offer scheme for live claimants was made on 28 February.  This will mean that former miners claiming compensation for respiratory disease will now be eligible to benefit from the speeding up of their claims following a high court ruling in October 2004.

Under the new arrangements, claimants will be able to opt for four fixed tariffs.  It will provide an alternative route for many who previously had to endure the lengthy claims process and it is estimated that up to 100,000 people will benefit.

The deceased risk offer scheme is due to go live by the summer.
