Clusters | The role of RDAs

What is the role of Regional Development Agencies?

The Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and Devolved Administrations (DAs) of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are now responsible for taking forward the strategic aspects of cluster policy development.

How is clusters policy implemented?

The RDAs are responsible for implementing clusters policy in each of the nine English regions, and the DAs for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Approaches and priority clusters vary from region to region, but work currently being carried out includes commissioning regional mapping studies, identifying and building links with important regional clusters and using clusters as the vehicle for wider economic development initiatives.

On a quarterly basis, DTI provides RDAs and DAs the opportunity to meet and share their experiences with clusters. This group provides officials the opportunity to:

  • Influence and spread of Best Practice within their respective regions.
  • Sharing information including: Good practice, case studies, and lessons learned.
  • Sharing of strategic thinking by group members' regions.
  • Strengthening National-Regional links.
  • Explore ideas for collaborative working.

The RDAs also work in partnership with DTI's Sector Units on industry-specific issues relating to the clusters in their regions.
