At this top level, we can
see the principal areas of regulation of chemicals. Some areas are relatively
self-contained, whereas others have very strong links between them. Each area,
indicated by a letter, is expanded upon separately in more detailed Maps.
In many organisations,
activity will be in progress on all these areas simultaneously. In some organisations,
or for certain types of project, there will be a step-wise progression through
these areas. The principal links connecting the areas have been shown. The links
show topics where sharing of data occurs, or where one area of regulation influences
another.
There is no definite starting
point for a user of the Atlas because several points of entry are possible. The
Maps relevant to a user should be easily established. For example:
 |
an
importer will need to know primarily about product, transport and safety related
data |
 |
a
process developer will need to be aware of all the areas |
 |
occupational
health work requires knowledge of the health and safety areas, and possibly the
building regulations

The topic-based regional Maps

These form common themes in
modern chemicals regulation. In the Atlas, the various types of regulations for
hazards and risks will be set out. From the Route Planner, you can choose the
areas of this Atlas that are of most relevance to your needs.
Some of the jargon and
abbreviations in common use in regulation of chemicals, and used in the Atlas,
can be found within the Glossary.
