UK Chemicals Regulatory Atlas

CHEMICAL PRODUCT REGULATIONS

This Map shows five possible ways that the chemical product regulations may apply to a particular chemical. ‘Product regulations’ means the basic classification and labelling procedures that apply irrespective of how a substance is used. Some regulations refer to this as ‘supply’. It centres around CHIP - The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations 2002, which are the major foundation of UK chemicals regulation.

The CHIP regulations carry with them compliance with EC Directives; countries outside the European Union generally have different requirements which are not described here. Map A deals essentially with substances that are classified as dangerous, and gives an overview of what that means and its implications.

The route through Map A depends upon establishing the regulatory status of a chemical product on the basis of a series of questions. Guides for you to help answer these questions are provided on the pages next to each Map. In each part of the Map references to the next level are provided. The aim is to establish exactly which regulations apply to a substance for purpose of supply.
