Dentistry
|
Introduction
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT)
published a Market Study (see below) into the private dentistry market on 26
March, recommending strengthening and broadening of statutory
controls on private dentists.
The DTI and Health Departments announced that Government would now consider
the report and its contents and recommendations and will publish a
response.
Government Response - 23 June 2003
The Government released the
following action plan in response to the Office of Fair Trading's
(OFT) investigation on the private dentistry market in the UK. The
action plan responds positively to all the OFT's recommendations.

Action Plan (4 pages).
Background
The OFT Report is in response to a
super-complaint made by the Consumers' Association in October 2001.
(The Enterprise Act gave certain consumer groups a right for their
representations to be fast-tracked for OFT consideration).
The OFT argue that the market is
not working well for consumers and suggest that 'measures to improve
the consumer information, to make self-regulation work effectively,
and to lift unnecessary regulation should make the private dental
market work better for consumers'.
DTI co-ordinated the Government
response, working closely with other Government departments and the
devolved administrations. The Government considered not only consumer
and competition issues in private dentistry but wider policy
objectives also.
