Q1. What do the Regulations do?

These regulations transpose EC Directive 84/500/EEC relating to ceramic articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. The Regulations require conformity with a British Standard (BS 6748) setting limits on the release of lead and cadmium from ceramic ware.

The legislation is available from The Stationery Office (0870 600 5522) or through bookshops and can also be viewed on the Internet at www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/

The British Standards Institution (BSI) can provide information about published safety standards for products. Their website can be visited on www.bsi-global.com and they can also be contacted on 0208 996 9001.

Q4. Who enforces the Regulations?

Local authority trading standards departments.

Q5. What penalties are available to the enforcement authorities?

Failure to meet the requirements of safety regulations can result in a fine of up to £5000 and/or a prison term of up to six months.
